PVC Furniture vs Plywood
The honest comparison, for the rooms where it actually matters. What the sheet is made of, what it does over ten years, and the question everyone asks - do screws hold in it.
Where plywood loses and PVC does not
Kitchen platforms, washbasin cabinets and monsoon damp are what finish wooden furniture early. Plywood is layers of wood held together with glue. Water gets into the edges, the layers lift, and the bottom shelf under a sink is usually the first to go. Termites treat it as food.
A PVC sheet has no wood in it at all. There is nothing for water to swell and nothing for a termite to eat. That is the whole of the difference, and everything below follows from it.
Hollow sheet, not solid plastic
A honeycomb inside
The sheet is not a solid slab. Inside it runs a honeycomb of ribs and hollow chambers, which is what keeps the weight down without giving up strength.
Lighter than wood, and still strong
Considerably lighter than traditional wood furniture, which makes fitting easier and puts less load on the wall - while still carrying a full wardrobe of clothes or a cupboard of utensils.
Screws and hinges hold
The usual worry about a hollow sheet. Those internal ribs are engineered for it: screws, hinges and handles hold under full load, and soft-close hardware stays where it was fitted.
The industry has already moved
Hollow PVC sheet is now the most widely used material for modular kitchens and wardrobes, because that balance of weight against strength is hard to beat.
The things you notice after a year
100% waterproof
Hot, rainy or cold, it does not swell, warp or delaminate. Water near the sink or the stove every day does nothing to it. This is why it belongs in a kitchen and a bathroom before anywhere else.
Termite and borer proof, for life
No organic material means no risk of termites, borers or any insect. Not treated against them - simply nothing there for them.
Fire resistant
The sheet is self-extinguishing. Unlike ordinary wood it does not easily catch fire, which matters most in the room where you cook.
Wipe and done
A damp cloth and it is clean. No polish, no oil, no yearly treatment.
Hygienic surface
The surface is non-porous, so it does not trap bacteria, mould or dust mites the way an open wood grain can. Again, kitchens and bathrooms first.
Cooler to the touch
Those hollow chambers insulate. In Ahmedabad summer the surface does not heat up the way a solid material does.
Quieter doors
The same hollow structure dampens sound a little, so a cabinet door closes with less noise than solid wood or solid PVC.
The finish is the laminate, not the sheet
The sheet is the structure. What you see is the laminate on it, in 1mm and 1.25mm - Crystal, Orian, Hexa, Flexibond, Rama and Lionia. Wood textures in teak, walnut and oak, solid colours, and modern finishes. That is where the design choice actually lives, and it is also the main thing that moves the price.
It gives the look of premium material at a lower cost, without the durability going with it. What it costs sets out the rates and what changes them.
Nothing is cut for it
No trees are felled to make this furniture, and PVC is recyclable. If that matters to you, it is a straightforward reason to choose it over plywood.
